Set up my own Family Tree website on my very own PC.
This series of posts is going to take you through a step by step process on how to set up your own Family Tree website on your very own PC by using WordPress, WampServer and the TFH Family History Plugin.
Please Note: If this all seems a little scary, please do not worry. I will walk you through each step of the process and you will soon see how the WordPress CMS will do all the work for you.
But first, just a basic explanation of what WordPress, WampServer and the TFH Family History Plugin are.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is an open source website creation tool written in PHP. It is probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS) in existence today.
With WordPress the Front end or “Look and Feel” of your site can easily be created using themes. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of themes that can be downloaded on the Internet, for free or on a paid basis.
WordPress also uses Plugins that can give your site extra features to enhance the overall functionality of the site.
What is WampServer?
WampServer is a downloadable package of applications that will allow you to run your own website environment on your own computer.
This package includes:
Apache2 – The most commonly used webserver on the Internet.
PHP – An open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.
MySQL Database – MySQL is the world’s most popular open source database. With its proven performance, reliability and ease-of-use, MySQL has become the leading database choice for web-based applications, used by high profile web properties including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo! and many more!
