Avenue of Honour

More than 700 plaques commemorating men lost at war were installed along Geelong Road and approximately only 250 remain, including more than 100 believed buried when the road was widened 40 years ago.

Hundreds were torn out during the widening project - some were later salvaged from a rubbish tip. The Commemoration Park Memorial Committee, has won broad support in ther campaign to have the plaques - some of which were buried by roadworks - moved from Geelong Road to Spotswood’s Mary Street Reserve.

The Footscray Historical Society and the local branch of the National Trust are fighting the move, saying the “Avenue of Honour” was funded by Footscray families as more than 2000 men and women enlisted from the area.
